MAKING SENSE OF CARPET

Carpets A carpets appearance and performance are determined by its fiber type and construction. The pile can be made of natural, synthetic, or a blend of different fibers.

Mountain Valley Floors, Inc. offers carpets that are manufactured using the following fiber properties: wool, nylon, and polyester.

The construction of carpet generally consists of cut pile, twist pile, or loop pile. Using the three basic types of construction the carpet manufacture has the ability to create designs that will perform for all different types of residential and business applications. These include Saxony for formal applications, textured Saxony/high twist frieze for casual applications, and loop/cut and loop pile carpets for high traffic applications.

Mountain Valley Floors, Inc. offers carpets that are constructed to meet the demands of today’s individual lifestyles. Our staff is qualified to guide you in a direction that is suitable for the needs of your home, office, or business facility. SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT things we consider are (1) the room that it will be in, (2) the amount of foot traffic to be expected, (3) whether children or pets will be adding to the natural wear and tear, (4) the use of the home or office, (5) length of time you will be living or working at the location, (6) existing sub floor, (7) environmental impact.

Carpet Cushion

MAKING SENSE OF CARPET CUSHION

Most carpets require a pad (or cushion) underneath and although you can’t see it, the cushion is as important as the carpet itself. The right pad not only gives a softer feel, but acts as a foundation increasing the life of your carpet by slowing the pile matting process which is inevitable with carpet over time. Carpet cushion will help absorb sound, and it allows air to circulate between the carpet and the floor so your carpet can breathe better and your vacuum will pick up an increased amount of dirt.

Mountain Valley Floors, Inc. offers cushions made from recycled bonded foam, rubber, and natural materials such as animal hair and jute. Some installations have specific requirements including radiant floor heating, increased pet traffic, healthier air quality etc. Please consult your Mountain Valley Floors, Inc. representative for more details on the right cushion for your flooring application.

MAKING SENSE OF HARDWOOD

Hardwood There are many options when it comes to wood flooring, from the different wood species to grain variance, there is something to fit any personality or style. Hardwood floors provide warmth and beauty to any room. There are many benefits of hardwood floors, such as the value they add to your home, easy cleaning, plus great style together with durability.

Solid hardwood is milled directly from lumber and is 100% solid wood. All solid hardwoods can be sanded and refinished if required (typically every 15-20 years). Also, urethane coated floors can be recoated as need be to renew the surface, which is more economical than sanding and refinishing. Solid hardwoods can be finished on-site or have a pre-finished protective layer, which protects the wood longer. Solid hardwood, however, is vulnerable to shrinking and expanding, depending on temperature and humidity.

Engineered wood is real wood, but instead of one solid piece it consists of multiple thin layers of wood, called plies, that are manufactured by gluing the layers together in a cross-ply construction. Because of this multi-layer structure, engineered wood is a much more stable product than solid wood and is less inclined to shrinking and expanding with changes in temperatures and humidity. Although engineered wood can not be refinished, it can be recoated, which will increase the longevity of the product.

Both solid and engineered hardwoods are among the longest lasting options in flooring, and with proper care may never need replacement.

MAKING SENSE OF LAMINATE

Carpet CushionCompared with other types of flooring, laminate offers some distinct advantages:

Laminate flooring is durable, easy to install, economical, offers a variety of styles, stain, fade, and moisture resistant, easy to clean and maintain, and “green” (environmentally-friendly). The appearance of laminate flooring has become so realistic that it is often mistaken for real hardwood. Choose Laminate if you have kids or pets and don’t want your floor to be damaged.

MAKING SENSE OF TILE

Tiles The majority of tile today is made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials that are then kiln-fired. The general classification used for this type of tile is usually “Ceramic Tiles”. These tiles can be split into two primary categories, porcelain tiles and ceramic (non-porcelain) tiles.

Ceramic tiles are commonly made from red or white clay fired in a kiln. They are almost always completed with a hard-wearing finish which contains the color and pattern. Ceramic tiles are used for both wall tile and floor tile applications and are softer products, making them easier to work with than porcelain. Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are usually appropriate for very low to moderate traffic and generally have a relatively high water absorption rating. This makes them less frost resistant and are more likely to wear and chip when matched up to a porcelain tile. Ceramic is for interior use only.

Porcelain tile is a tile that is generally made by the dust pressed method from porcelain clays which produces a tile that is dense, solid, fine grained and smooth. Porcelain tiles usually have a much lower water absorption rate than ceramic tiles, making them frost resistant. Porcelain tiles are much harder and more wear and damage resistant than non-porcelain ceramic tiles, making them suitable for the heaviest residential and commercial traffic. Full body porcelain tiles carry the color and pattern through the entire thickness of the tile making them wear better than ceramic, which makes porcelain suitable for any application from residential to the highest traffic commercial buildings. Porcelain tiles are available in matte, unglazed or high polished finishes.

Both products are installed in a similar fashion using a cement-based thin set product. When installing tile you must have the proper sub-floor to avoid problems with performance. Tile can be installed directly on top of a concrete subfloor, but needs to have a quality underlayment if installing over a wood subfloor. Tile can bring elegance and style to any room and has enduring quality that will last.

Cork Flooring

MAKING SENSE OF ECO-PRODUCTS

There is a major shift taking place in the way we look at the environment and how we can all play a role in making decisions that are eco-friendly. Flooring is not an exception in this trend and there are now many available products that are natural and safe for our environment. Check out our True Green Program for more information.

Cork floors have been used for decades and have come a long way in increased quality. There are many advantages of cork floors which include durability, sound travel reduction, keeping a warm environment, and reducing allergens. Cork has a unique look and a variety of styles that make this natural product an all around winner. The product is manufactured in tiles and planks to cater to an individual’s preference. Most cork installs are like a laminate wood with a click together system.

Bamboo flooring is one of your most durable products in the market. Bamboo is 25% harder than Oak and 12% harder than Maple. Bamboo, like cork, is easy to clean and may make it easier to reduce exposure to allergens in your home or office. In the market place, bamboo is becoming more and more popular with its wide variety of styles and stains to fit any décor. It is becoming a Bamboo Flooring green builder and architect favorite because it is a rapidly growing renewable resource with an excellent visual appeal. Bamboo is manufactured like hardwood in either a solid or an engineered product, with a similar installation. It is important to acclimate your bamboo to the environment in which it will be installed to reduce the possibility of expansion and contraction. Most manufactures recommend at least 48 hours for bamboo to be fully acclimated.
